The Maryland Birdies golf club was brought into the Birdies nest at the
Children's Home previously located on Church Road in Petersburg, Virginia. The annual golf event was over, and the awards and banquet were under way. Soon afterwards, the President of the Virginia Birdies, Ted Cabral asked for a vote to make us Maryland Birdies. A motion and vote were taken from the other golf clubs, and the results allowed us to become Maryland Birdies. That was June of 2000. Already established Birdie Clubs were the Cape Cod Birdies, Canadian Birdies, Georgia Birdies and the Virginia Birdies, the very first Birdie Club. Maryland players present at that time were James Burks, Robert Ezell, William Hall, Milton Leigh, Eugene Chandler, Durce Jackson, Pearlis Finney, Reggie Washington, Robert Smith, Samuel Gilliam and Edgar Collins. Since this time, the South Carolina Birdies were established. Our first President was Pearlies Finney who passed away in December 2019.
